Tour Description
In December 1964, a powerful hurricane decimated the town, leaving it in ruins and causing numerous fatalities. Since the typhoon devastated the railway that connected Dhanushkodi to the mainland, the settlement has stayed mainly deserted. Even with its sad history, Dhanushkodi is a well liked travel destination. Its calm beaches, the ruins of the old town, and its closeness to the Rameswaram pilgrimage site draw tourists. There are breathtaking views of the ocean on both sides of the road that leads from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi's surroundings are well known for their abundance of marine life and chances for birdwatching. Many aquatic animals can be found in the adjacent Gulf of Mannar Aquatic National Park.
