Ancient writings frequently mention Muziris, such as the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a Greek travelogue from the first century CE. Numerous literary works written in Tamil and Roman also make mention of it. Archaeological digs in the present day Keralan town of Pattanam have uncovered Roman amphorae, semi precious stones, and ceramics, indicating significant commercial connections with the Roman Empire. These results corroborate the theory that ancient Muziris was located in Pattanam. Muziris was a cross cultural melting pot in addition to being a centre of trade.
